The Problem with Single Use Water Bottles
As quoted in a recent USA TODAY article:
"Researchers at the State University of New York at Fredonia and non-profit journalism organization Orb Media previously tested 259 water bottles from 11 brands sold across nine countries. They found that 93% of those tested contained microplastic contamination, according the results of their study."
"But it's still unclear how exactly that could affect the human body. The next step for researchers to take would be to complete a comprehensive human health risk assessment and look into different lifetime exposures of people who consume water from water bottles, she said."

Plastic Water Bottle Alternatives
With best available science about micro- and nano-plastics negatively impacting our health, I only recommend glass or stainless water bottles. The filters below remove most microplastics, so you could still opt for bpa-plastic (which both companies offer) bottles but I'm not going that route for my own family. It's a personal choice though.
Water Bottle Filter Kit
Why buy new water bottles if you already own a Hydro Flask, Iron Flask, Hydro Cell or Yeti that you can easily add filtration to with epic’s “Answer 2.0” kit.
This filter removes most microplastics, forever chemicals, pharmaceuticals and cancer-causing chlorination byproducts.
Stainless Straw Filter Water Bottle
Epic’s bottles filter water through a straw, so no gulping with this design. The stainless bottle is a bit on the large size and doesn’t fit cup holders, but it’s great for long treks or trips.
It also filters most contaminants.
Stick with the ridged filter if you're a hiker and want to filter stream water on the trail.
Titanium Wide Mouth Water Bottle
I don't have this product, but it looks like it does the job and is great for people who don't like to drink through a straw.
However, it's made from titanium and pretty spendy so I recommend this for a really nice gift for that person who is active and loves being outside!
