Unleash Your Inner Superhero Against Acne Villains
A recent investigation by the independent lab Valisure has unveiled a shocking truth - almost 100 acne-fighting products in the U.S. harbor a sneaky villain called benzene, a known carcinogen. Surprisingly, benzoyl peroxide, a trusted ally, can transform into benzene, becoming more toxic when exposed to heat (like in a car) and escaping from its packaging as a gaseous foe.
Why Be a Hero?
Independent lab Valisure scrutinized 175 popular acne products and unearthed 99 with up to 12 times the permitted benzene levels. On the flip side, experts reveal that any trace of benzene is a no-go for us mere mortals. According to Christopher Bunick, MD, PhD, associate professor of dermatology and physician-scientist at the Yale University School of Medicine and editor-in-chief of Dermatology Times, "First and foremost that there is not a safe level of benzene that can exist in any skin care product, over the counter or prescription. Benzene is highly carcinogenic."
Tested Acne Avengers with Benzene in their Ingredients
Behold, the list of acne products containing Benzene by Valisure: Proactiv, Target’s Up & Up, Clinique, Clearasil, La Roche-Posay, PanOxyl, Sandra Lee, Oxy, Galderma, Equate, Differin, CeraVe, Sandoz, TARO and Neutrogena.
